Wavehouse

While looking for day trip ideas Mick remembered having a beer by the beach while on business in San Diego. She’d spent the evening watching people surf the Flowrider, a man-made wave, and filed it away as “must return”.
Fast forward to Wednesday, July 14, 2010, our 9 year wedding anniversary. We didn’t feel like finding a baby sitter and doing the expected go out to dinner thing, wanted to include the boys in our day, and were looking for ideas when Mick remembered the Wavehouse. Sold.
After an easy two hour drive we pulled up to an area surrounded on all sides by the Belmont Park amusement park, a strip of run-down tourist souvenir shops, and the crowded beach – what looked like a combo of Venice beach and Cony Island. I immediately started thinking “this may be really cheesy” but didn’t want to voice anything negative. Then Mick said “This might be cheesy” and we laughed and giggled about how we thought the same thing, painted eachother’s toe nails, and pinky swore to always be best friends forever…..no we didn’t. But we did commit to keeping an open mind and being ok with it if it was too cheesy and not somewhere we wanted to stay. We’d enjoy the day either way.
The wave got us though. I think I could’ve left without riding it, but Mick wasn’t going to miss out, not without a good pout on the ride back, and we lucked out in that it’s $30 for an hour, but because we couldn’t ride it at the same time they agreed to let us split the hour and tag team with the boys.
No getting around it, the wave is harder than it looks and a hell of a lot of fun. The food at the outdoor cafe is good and reasonably priced and the boys had plenty of space to run around with other kids, plus the beach is right there and it’s a great one for running around.
One thing to keep in mind, it is a bar as well….on the beach…….which is catnip for burnouts and skanks. But they were just one small faction and made for some people watching fun after the wave fun.  There were plenty of families and kids too, especially throughout the daytime hours.
I can think of a few people who would have a great time riding this sucker, and it wouldn’t take much to get us to go back, especially since after your first time the price goes down to $20/hour.

Happy Anniversary Mickie and Jerry! Yes, you do celebrate very well. However, unlike your other Mother, I do NOT want to do that next time I come visit you. But you do know where you can find a great babysitter – and I might find I know one of those burnouts from back in the sixties!!
