One week.
That was all that remained and I was moving on, going to law school. Go through the week, graduate Saturday.
Staying with a friend because my lease is up. Come home from the gym and his study group is there finishing a marketing project. Cute girl. Excuse myself to make dinner. Pop my head out of the kitchen.
“Weren’t you in my finance class? two years ago? 8am? You always dressed up like you were going right to work after class. Everyone else was in shorts and hats.”
“No.”
She’s lying.
I sit amongst them and eat dinner, interrupting. My friend and another partner don’t seem to mind, as they peruse Playboy’s Girls of the SEC. She thinks they’re neanderthals. And they aren’t being respectful that there is a lady in the house, leaving magazines like that lying about. It’s a good issue though.
She’s moving to St. Louis to go to grad school at Wash U. Her boyfriend of three years is from there and he’s already moved back. Definitive. Solid plans.
“That’s cool.”
What are you doing?
“Law school.”
I sound more solid than I am.
Two hours later they leave. I lay on the couch talking to my friend.
“She’s cute” I say.
“Yeah she is.” he replies.
“I feel sorry for her boyfriend” I joke.
“Why?”
“Because he just lost his girlfriend.”
That was 17 years ago.
Today we’re married 10 years.
I don’t think I’ve been happier about an anniversary.
I asked her once why she left that boyfriend for me.
“He wanted me. You needed me.”
We’ve earned this one Mick.
