Going green – what does that mean?
After reading more about how the lovely Lake Tahoe is losing it’s ridiculously blue color by increasing amounts every year, it got us thinking about the environment overall. Are we being proactive enough, or are we blissfully coasting along? How much are we actually contributing to problem? So after some debate, some procrastination, and some just plain acting like we were too busy, we decided that the Kickass Crew are going to do an initial 7-day challenge to become more green. Then we’ll reassess at the end of the week and see where we go from there.
So we officially kickoff Mick’s Big Fat Green Challenge.
Rules to MBFGC: Try one new thing each day for the next week that is better for the environment, then continue implementing those things in our regular patterns, singlehandedly saving the planet.
You’re welcome.

I love this challenge! I will be interested to see how your experience plays out.
There’s obviously way more than ten things you could do and I’m not good at picking favorites, so let’s just call this “Ten Things I Recommend That You Try For A Day, Although There Are More That Are Good, Too” (from “easiest” to “hardest”):
10. Shower/bathe together and save waterrrrr.
9. Eat vegetarian or vegan.
8. Don’t drink from or eat off of anything that isn’t re-usable (no plastic forks or styrofoam plates).
7. Make something new out of something old (ex. melt old candle numbs together to make a new candle or create new toys out of old toys)
6. Limit your toilet paper square usage & only flush when you poo.
5. Turn off (and unplug, if you can) EVERYTHING that you aren’t using.
4. Only eat food items from or made in LA or the southern CA area.
3. Walk/ride your bike/take public transit for a day.
2. Start a compost bin! I have a vermicompost bin in my apartment and I love it. (I’m sure the boys would love to dig in the wormy dirt).
1. Get another family to do your challenge once you complete it.
I know there’s some Green movement out there who would love to get the rights to that picture!! Priceless!!
What a great list! #1 is the one that especially caught my attention. Thanks, Sarah!
You guys let me know how that vegan thing works out. I’ll be over here finishing my bacon.
–A.J.
I’m reading Eating Animals right now (by Johnathan Safran Foer). You might eat less bacon after reading it… If you need some veganspiration. Another good one: The Omnivore’s Dilemma (Michael Pollan). It’s super tough to go completely vegan, but I like it when, at the end of any day, I’ve realized that I haven’t had any animal products.
Heard about Omnivore’s Dilemma and it sounds interesting. Food Inc. was a good watch. Have to tell you though, at the end of the day I like it when I’ve realized those ribs were damn good.
Thanks for the comments Sarah, we appreciate it!
