Took Santana camping at Buckhorn to have a little one on one time, after having been away with Sebastian on our trip.
I wanted to give him some one on one time with me after being away for over a week, and, likewise, give Seb a chance to get his mom’s undivided attention.
Buckhorn turned out to be a great place to do it.
Located in the Angeles National Forest, North of Pasadena, and about an hour and 20 minute drive from Hollywood, Buckhorn feels like a real change of surroundings. Tall pines and mountainous terrain give the impression of having traveled further than you have (due in large part to an altitude of 6,400 feet), and the endless hiking opportunities in the area make your stamina the only limit to exploration. In fact, from Buckhorn you can hike out and hook up with the Pacific Crest Trail, next stop Canada.
When you head out on a hike, and you’ll definitely want to, be sure to remember much of the trek on the way out is downhill, so the way back….take it from me, it can be a real ass kicker….

(Buckhorn is located in the area of the blue hikers at the upper right corner).
From the 210 Freeway in La Canada, head northeast on the Angeles Crest Highway (CA 2) for 35 miles. Buckhorn Campground is on the left just past the Mt. Waterman ski area. Open from April to October.
*Update: Due to the Station Fire of fall ’09 in the Angeles National Forest, be sure to check conditions in any area campgrounds before planning you trip. Word is Buckhorn is open but as of July 2010 you have to take Big Tujunga Canyon Rd, due to CA2 still being closed. Bright side is this means less people there.
