The Trailblazer

En route to Sayulita, Mexico to surf

En route to Sayulita, Mexico

Around the time my father found out he was going to be a grandfather, he and I had a conversation over the phone which he closed by saying “You’re a great man.” His voice carried a tone of admiration and it embarrassed me.
Because I wasn’t.
My journey toward manhood began in earnest March 1, 2004.

Happy sixth birthday son.

Sebi, I’m sure your grandfather is still watching and continues to see the greatness in his son and the journey your Daddy is taking with you. Happy Birthday, Sebi.

At dinner tonight Ruby looked up with a sad countenance and said, “aww, we missed Sebs birthday!” I said, “Nah, you can wish him Happy Birthday next time we see him.” She seemed satisfied with that answer :) And to that, I wish you a Happy Birthday Sebastian!!! Wow, Big 6!

    Love you,
    Mike, Robyn, Ruby & Bolen

I like something about that one too. There’s a sense of team and adventure in it for me. Thanks Amy.

Wow! Can’t believe Seb is 6! Seems like yesterday I moved back to NYC and met you guys for dinner in the east village and I couldn’t believe your little baby was sitting in the middle of a loud, busy east village restaurant and not making a peep. Just staring at the lights, if I remember correctly. Seemed as comfortable as could be. And I couldn’t believe you guys brought him there. It was then that I realized you guys were not gonna be typical parents. Boy, did that turn out to be true. Happy 6th Seb!

I remember that night clearly. The benefits of anti-smoking laws! We’re a slightly bigger crew now eh?
Thanks for the compliments Rob, we just keep trying to do what seems natural, going with our instincts and being about the “yes”. Maybe it’s all one big improve…
