Black Creek

I finally got around to reviewing some of the footage from the trip Sebastian and I took this year, camping from Tallahassee to L.A. via the southern route – a trip we’ve dubbed Southern Comfort.  Glad I did because the timing was right as it coincided with a topic I’ve been thinking about lately, which I think is worth hitting on in the near future.

For now, check out this footage of the Black Creek area north of Hattisburg, Mississippi, in the Desoto National Forest.  As I’ve mentioned in the past, it felt like an old time adventure canoeing the creek, like we were two literary runaways passing time in the hot sun and cool waters of a place we’d discovered before anyone else; falling out of the canoe, swimming, running around the sand banks, napping if we felt like it, hootin’ at the birds, watchin’ the fish jump, and laughin’ at our own jokes.

Then we came around a bend and saw Joe Rich (“Everyone calls me Mr. Shorty”) gathering wood on a bank.  We pulled over to see what he knew about Our Creek and if he was going to tell any other grown ups we were out there.

Joe reminded me just how much of a beautiful art form conversation is in the South.  What you’ll see was all prompted by a “Hi there, you from around here?”  I thought about including subtitles, but part of the fun is sussing just what Joe’s saying.

It started out as a curious goof, but in the end he left us with some words of wisdom…then he winked, promised not to tell any grown ups he’d seen us, and skimmed off around the bend.

It was a good day.

Was going to put a bid in for JoPa’s glasses but I think I’ll hold out for his high waters. ;-)
