Our original plan was to hit San Antonio after Houston and camp about 30 minutes north on the Guadalupe River, but we were only staying one night and figured a more active setting would be a better choice just before what would be one of our longer drives to New Mexico the following day.
So we headed to Enchanted Rock State Park, west of Austin and about an hour and a half north of San Antonio. Good move.
First off, it allowed for a stop at City Meat Market in Giddings, TX, at the strong recommendation of my good friend Stroh.
Boy was it worth it. Old school and nothing but mmmm mmmm good.

Secondly, Enchanted Rock rocks! If you ever go site 35 is the one to get.

I have to say how inspired and excited I am to see Sebastian shares my enjoyment of rock climbing and bouldering.
Many days in my childhood, especially the Wyoming years, were spent climbing up some natural structure or another for no good reason other than to do it. Sebastian’s drive to keep finding ways to push higher surpassed mine at times and it was an opportunity to watch his problem solving skills in action. Hours of scrambling and climbing up the hard way led us to the highest point as far as the eye could see, where we finished the rest of our City Meat goods and watched the sun go down. We then hiked back down, much of it in the dark (with our cool-ass headlamp on) and crashed, exhausted.
I see my boy on days like this and get to see his bravery, kindness, intellect, his sensitivity and determination, all on display and I count myself fortunate that he is not only my son, but my friend.

Excerpt of the Day:
Daddy: I was country….
Daddy and Sebi: when country wasn’t cooooollllllll
(pause)
Sebi: I wonder why country wasn’t cool?
Daddy: Dunno. That’s a good question.
(slight pause)
Sebi: Maybe there were not nice people.
Daddy: I bet you’re right.
