Kauai Roads

Kauai Roads

Huh…funny.  I was just beginning to write a little something for Photo Fridays about Kauai, how special our time there was, and how this picture represents so much of it to me, then I remembered we’d tossed around the idea of naming our coming child (Mick was pregnant at the time) Kauai.  We quickly decided it didn’t really feel natural, or didn’t fit and moved on.  A few months later we had our second boy and named him Santana, a name we’d loved for years and had always kept in our pocket as a possibility.  Three years later, though, another sweet boy.  Kai.  Pretty close, didn’t even think of it.  Kauai.  Kai.  Similar feel to the words…open, ocean, peaceful.

It’s a magical place, so undeveloped, so severely beautiful.  Sometimes I see images and I feel “That’s what I want from life”.  This is one of those images for me.  It contains adventure, tenderness, hope, simplicity, the allure of the unknown, and the security of the known and loved.

I’m going to cry. I just got back from Kauai and want to go back NOW.

You described it perfectly: severely beautiful. And the culture is amazing (and there IS culture there). I’m drinking my Kauai Coffee at this very moment and wishing my way back to the island.
