Spotting Spouts

Grey whale migration starts up again off the California coast. Big Sur Coast and wild flowers

The closer we get to March the more the numbers will increase, including may females making their way back toward cold Alaskan waters with new calves in tow.
First time for me, and I didn’t expect it, but spotting the whales coming up for air from time to time was magical. Surprising, given that what you’re seeing with the naked eye is just the spray from a spout, but there is something mystically wild about knowing they’re right there.

Point Lobos north of Big Sur offers prime coast line, great little hikes, and perfect whale watching vistas. It’s a longer, twisting drive home down the coast, but this is one of those times when it pays to do things the hard way… A philosophy Santana took to heart as we scurried around to find a bathroom after he swore “I has to go poo, I has to go poo”. Ten yards outside the restroom he unreliably and suspiciously changed his mind then cried, very loudly, for 15 minutes as Mickie took him in and made him sit on the toilet. To say he was pissed doesn’t begin to describe the scene as his piercing cries disturbed all sense of tranquil nature.
Sebastian, Kai, and I stayed outside, rolling our eyes at passing strangers like “some woman with her kid that won’t shut up in there.”
Did I mention the whales were magical?

Great work guys! Looking forward to following your evolution. I read a quote this morning that reminded me of you all and your kickass adventuring:

“Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.
To keep our faces toward change and
    behave like free spirits
    in the presence of fate
    is strength undefeatable.”

    Helen Keller (1940)
